At a point during the last decade, it seemed like the days of classic Disney animation movies were behind us and had be replaced by a new age of CG animation. This was a tough pill to swallow for many Disney fans, and it appeared that their focus had shifted toward Pixar films rather than their own animated stories. Well that all changed during the last few years following the success of Frozen, and the recent critical acclaim for their film Zootopia. Its safe to say Disney is back on top, and we need to be looking out for any of their films in the next few years. One such film is Moana, which we now finally have a trailer for thanks to The Rock himself.
Below is the first trailer for Moana:
The trailer doesn't give us too much information about the plot, but it does introduce us to the film's two main characters; Moana (Played by newcomer Auli'i Cravalho) and The Rock's Maui. Thanks to a plot synopsis released by Disney, we now know that the film will focus on Moana who is the ancestor of the world's greatest sailors who journey across the island of Oceana 3,000 years ago. Yet their journeys suddenly stopped for unknown reasons, and Moana now sets out to finish what they had started along with her new friends the demi-god Maui, a pig named Pua, and a chicken named Hei Hei.
On the surface it seems like a relatively simple family friendly plot, but know Disney we're sure to get a much deeper narrative than we're expecting. There's also a great deal of talent involved with this film including directors Ron Clements and John Musker who are famous for their work on the Disney classics The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. So as you can imagine the movie will of course have singing involved, with Hamilton's Lin Manuel Miranda working on the film's music.
There are several other talented people involved with the film including current Disney favorite Alan Tudyk providing a voice after his work on Wreck-It-Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Zootopia. Philip Soo of Hamilton fame will also be providing a voice as a villager named Motunui. The film's script was also worked on by Pamela Ribon (Samantha Who?), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), and Jared Bush (Zootopia) alongside directors Musker and Clements. Below is the first poster for the film which was released just a few days before the trailer:
