Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski's all new adaption of of the graphic novel Oblivion has recently been dropped by Disney for apparently not being "Disney friendly". Well now Universal has picked up the film, and has already taken their first step in casting a big star; Tom Cruise.
According to Deadline, Cruise has signed on for the Kosinski's film after being rumored for the part. While Tron: Legacy wasn't the big success Disney was hoping for, Kosinski might have a better shot now casting Cruise. Here is the official plot for the film:In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.
What was described in the text above was basically the exact role Cruise played in Steven Spielberg's 2002 Sci-fi hit; Minority Report. It's a good thing Cruise actually nailed the role in Minority Report, and the role fits him like a glove by now. But with out Spielberg in the director chair, will Cruise be able to bring the same drama he brought the last time? It all depends on if Kosinski manages to get a decent supporting cast.
It's quite a surprise that Cruise signed on for the film, considering his busy schedule which includes Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Rock of the Ages, and Guillermo Del Toro's two latest projects At the Mountains of Madness, and Pacific Rim.
With the thought in mind that Kosinski can handle vast and creative futuristic worlds well, as well as Cruise's experience in a similar role, it seems like a perfect match up. We can only hope the movie doesn't just feel like Deja Vu, and offers something completely new to the Sci-fi genre.
