The star of the British detective TV show Luthor has signed on to play the character of Sensi in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, which is the role that Tom Cruise was previously rumored for. Del Toro's next take to the directors chair is shaping up great, and with actor Charlie Humman costaring, Pacific Rim could windup being the next Avatar.
Probably. Guillermo del Toro is best known for his direction of the Hellboy series, and his wide range of monster films such as Pan's Labyrinth, and Blade II. Now del Toro's all new film will follow an invasion of monsters from a large portal on Earth, coming from a place called the Anteverse. The military then launches a program called the Jaeger program, which trains pilots into manning giant robotic suits against the invaders.
With some alien invasion films hitting big hitting big with audiences (And their money) recently such as Avatar, and others turning out to be let downs like Battle: Los Angeles. With a great cast so far, and such a creative mind such as del Toro behind the camera, the only problem with the film is it's PG: 13 rating (Which may limit del Toro from making his terrifying monster designs).
It comes as a surprise that Elba will be playing the lead since he's already working on a very similar film, which is Ridley Scott's Prometheaus. Most would think Tom Cruise would've landed the role, after loosing his lead in del Toro's other planned film (At the Mountains of Madness), he was almost dead set for the role this time around.
As I said earlier, Pacific Rim is shaping up to be a great film, and a film that Sci-fi fan really should be keeping an eye out for. Let's see if del Toro desides to film it in 3D (Which I doubt). Pacific Rim will be hitting theaters in Fall of 2013.
What do you think of Pacific Rim? Do you have high expectations for it?
