The Latest On The He-Man: Masters of the Universe Reboot

If your memory can stretch far enough, then you'll probably remember who He-Man is, and his original eighties cartoon. Now you might not remember (Or want to at all) that he also had a not so successful movie back in the eighties staring Dolph Lungren, but now he's getting a second chance at the big screen. With similar films such as Conan the Barbarian and Thor hitting big in the box office, could a He-Man movie work?

For those who aren't aware of the story of a young man named Prince Adam, whose parents are the rulers of a planet called Eternia. A Sorceress gives Adam a Power Sword, which allows him to become He-Man. The sword also turns Adam's pet tiger Cringer into Battle Cat. He-Man adventures with Man-At-Arms, Orko, and Teela. The teams has to fight against the evil Skeletor, who is trying to get to the Castle Grayskull. If he infiltrates the Castle Grayskull, then he becomes ruler of Eternia and the universe.

So as you can see, the plot isn't exactly 'easy' to translate onto the bog screen. So far, a script had been written last year by Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li) but was rejected, and the script is now being written by Predators writers Alex Livtak and Michael Finch. And it's been fifteen months since the pair has started the script, and they still have yet to turn in a draft.

But while the film seems to be in development hell, Sony Vice President DeVon Franklin gave a little update on the script to Crosswalk:

“One of other things I’m really excited about is we’re doing a reboot of the 1980s franchise Masters of the Universe. The He-Man franchise. Very excited about that. Should have that script very soon. I’m praying that we can start figuring out how we’re going to make it.”

Now one of the primary problems the original He-Man film had was it's lack of screen time on Eternia. The film was altered so that it would take place on Earth, which really took away from the best part of the He-Man story. With the technology and advances in CGI that we have today, He-Man can take place completely on Eternia, similar to what was done with Pandora in Avatar. We've already learned that when we don't see enough of the story's other worldly characters and settings, it really down grates the film (See Green Lantern).

Obviously, casting should begin soon, with names such as Channing Tatum, Kellan Lutz, and even Thor's Chris Hemworth going around. I personally believe a different actor should be chosen for Adam, so Adam and He-Man appearances differentiate (Unlike in the old cartoon, where all that was changed was his outfit). I'd personally like to see Jake Abel or Alex Pettyfer as Prince Adam, and Armie Hammer as He-Man. What do you think?
