Top 10 Best (And My Personal Favorite) Movies Of 2017

If you take a look at my most anticipated list from last year, than you'll see there were certainly some movies that I was a tad overly enthusiastic about. But the beauty of it is, this list is comprised of a majority of films I would've have never expected to like as much as I did, some of which I hadn't even heard of at this time last year. Now keep in mind these might not all be the most critically praised films of the year, but they're the ones I felt had the perfect combination of being greatly made films along with being entertaining ones. I missed out on a lot of movies this year, so chances are that if there's a movie you're surprised not to see here, its probably because I haven't seen it yet. With that disclaimer aside, without further ado here are my personal top ten movies of the year 2017.

10. Split

I have to admit, I was one of those guys who strictly based my perception of M. Night Shyamalan by his work on The Last Airbender. But after seeing his old work, I've truly come to appreciate him as a creative visionary who just doesn't always get it right. Well with Split, he got it right. Specifically by casting the talented James McAvoy to play all these different personalities.

McAvoy is able to go from such a sinister and horrifying character to an innocent little boy in the blink of an eye, and that just makes the character all the more terrifying. Like with some other movies on this list, the final act isn't exactly as good as it should've been. But the last scene connecting the movie to Shyamalan's Unbreakable was a great twist, and opens the door for an extremely exciting and different type of superhero universe than we've ever seen before. 

9. Spider-Man: Homecoming

If there's one thing Spider-Man: Homecoming proved to me, its that Tom Holland is a perfect Peter Parker, and just the guy to bring the character into the MCU. I might be one of the few who has loved every actor who has played the role so far, but Holland really feels like a small time crime fighter just trying to make it big as a hero while also being a genuine kid dealing with high school problems.

None of the kids in this movie feel like adults playing high school students, and thats a huge plus that makes this feel like a coming of age story for Spider-Man. While it doesn't exactly feel as much like a Spider-Man movie as I wish it would've because of the changes from the source material and abundance of MCU references, I love that its a new take a character we've seen so many times. Plus Michael Keaton made just as great of a villain as I thought he would.

8. Thor: Ragnarok

I would've never expected to enjoy a Thor movie this much, and I'm so happy I did. I was cautiously optimistic about this movie, especially after how much I hated Thor: Dark World. But thanks to director Taika Waititi, the Thor franchise got the much needed revamp and went in a completely new direction with both its tone and setting. 

Everyone from the ensemble cast including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeff Goldblum, and Taika himself are fantastic. Its honestly the most fun I had at the movies all year, and really just finally made Hemsworth's Thor as likable as he should be. While there are some flaws with just how serious the film's events of Ragnarok are actually taken amongst all the humor, as well as Cate Blachett's Hela falling short of being a real iconic threat, I had a blast watching this movie.

7. Get Out

I have to admit, I think I was one of the few people who had my eyes on Get Out since last year. As a huge Key and Peele fan, I was surprised to hear Jordan Peele was going to go solo and try his hand at directing a horror movie. While I'm glad he did. Peele managed to bring us such a creative and iconic horror movie that will be remembered for generations.

Yet some how in the midst of it all, he still managed to inject some humor throughout the movie and make Daniel Kaluuya's character likable and easy to root for. You literally want this dude to get the hell out of there. The movie takes some very unexpected twists that really caught me off guard, and had me on the edge of my seat until the film's finale.

6. Lady Bird

Coming of age smaller budget films have sort of become my thing for the last couple of years, and have been a nice break from superhero blockbuster fatigue. Lady Bird is just the type of movie I was looking for, with characters and situations that couldn't feel more genuine and real. I managed to care about just about every character Lady interacts with in this movie, and thats not something that can be said for most movies.

While the plot isn't the most structured or clear for the viewer, thats part of what makes it feel so authentic. Take it from a guy who left high school not too long ago, this movie is more relatable than I would've thought a movie about a rebellious teen girl at a Catholic school would be for me. The twists and the way people come and go from Lady's life, along with the spectacular acting and dialogue contribute to this sense of realism Greta Gerwig was able to capture. 

5. The Florida Project

As someone who lives in Florida and has been to Disney World several times, I've actually learned a little bit about what goes at the motels in the area. Director Sean Baker did a great job capturing the innocence of these young kids who live at the hotel, specifically with the main character Moone amongst all the terrible things going on with the adults they live with.

While the film doesn't have much of a plot, you're too entertained with these characters who feels like real life people. Even though throughout the movie only minor things happen to them, you become so attached to the characters that every single thing obstacle they face feels personal. The combination of newcomers Brooklyn Pierce and Bria Vinaite is what really sells the movie with their genuine chemistry, as well as their relationship with Willem Dafoe's character Bobby.

4. Baby Driver

This was another movie I had my eyes on thanks to its talented cast, and director Edgar Wright being at the helm. Baby Driver ended up being the fun fast paced film I was expecting, with some of the coolest characters and lines of dialogue I've seen in a long time. Everyone from the ensemble cast get their time to shine in this movie, including scene stealers like Lily James, Jon Hamm, and of course Jamie Foxx.

I was entertained throughout by not only the characters and story, but also the beautiful way Wright shot the movie. Between the seamless scene transitions, colorful cinematography, and of course the way he incorporates the music for both the character of Baby and the audience is just amazing. Will I did feel the last act was a bit rushed and out of place by the time the credits role, that can't take away from the joy ride I was on throughout the bulk of this film.

3. The Disaster Artist

Who would've thought a movie based on the worst movie of all time would be so good. With the team involved with The Disaster Artist, including James and Dave Franco as the film's leads, this interpretation of the story of Tommy Wiseau was bound to be a success. With James' spot on impression of Wiseau, along with some great chemistry between the two brothers, the movie manages to do the impossible by humanizing Tommy.

While the movie was just as funny as I thought it would be, what really surprised was how much heart it had. I really felt for these two guys just trying to make it in Hollywood, and the frustrations they were going through. I also loved how real the relationships between the characters felt, specifically how everyone reacts to Tommy's antics. Disaster Artist was definitely one of the most fun surprises of the year.

2. It

Make a movie about a group of kids in the 80s, and I'm already there. I had a feeling It would try to hop off the success of Stranger Things, but it ended up making its mark as its completely own thing. The kids in this movie were just amazing, and all around had such unique and fun personalities brought to life so perfectly by the young stars.

I'm honestly not a big fan of horror movies, but this movie honestly works more as an adventure movie. Unraveling the true horrors of this town outside of any thing supernatural, as well as the lure and history of Pennywise couldn't have been made more interesting. I honestly can't wait to see the adult versions of these characters take on that damn clown again in Chapter 2.

1. Logan

I'm still crying after this one. Logan is one of those rare movies that honestly didn't even have to be based on a comic book, and would have stood on its own as a masterpiece. But the emotions are even higher having followed these characters for so many years, specifically James Howlett himself. I couldn't believe just how creative James Mangold got with this movie, between the world it takes place in and his vision of what a tragic future for mutants might be like.

Logan and X-23's action sequences are truly remarkable, but where the movie really stands out is its character moments. The performances by new comer Dafne Keen, Jackman in his last turn as Wolverine, and a surprisingly gut wrenching performance by Patrick Stewart as an old sick Charles Xavier all feel so real that you forget they are superhuman characters. They finally just feel human.

'Venom' Will Adapt Lethal Protector Comic Storyline; Riz Ahmed And Michelle Williams Characters Revealed

You'd think a Venom movie starring Oscar nominee Tom Hardy in the lead role would have a little more hype and excitement around it right now, especially considering the fact that it hits theaters next year. But that honestly hasn't been the case, as fans are still too concerned about whether Sony will finally do the character justice this time around. While having Hardy in the lead role along with an extremely stellar supporting cast and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer should be enough, the simple fact that Spider-Man might have nothing to do with this movie is enough to worry fans like myself. Well at least we have a little more information on what the story of the movie will be now, and its sure to excite some Venom comic book fans out there. We also might finally know who Riz Ahmed is playing in the movie, and its a character who was key to the storyline.

The confirmation that the film will be adapting Venom: Lethal Protector came courtesy of Hardy himself, who explained it during a video message for fans at Comic-Con in Sao Paolo. This storyline was published by Marvel in 1993, and focused on Venom becoming an anti-hero of sorts of coming to a truce with Spider-Man. Eddie Brock movies to San Francisco (Which Hardy confirmed will also be the location of the film), and then saw the Life Foundation hunting down Venom in hopes to study his symbiote. The organization ends up making their own team of spawns of the symbiote including Agony, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Scream that Venom must take on himself.

The story line may seem like a random strange choice, but it actually seems very smart. We'll be getting a more heroic Venom we can root for, who will still presumably be a violent killer. It also easily explains the absence of Spider-Man who most likely won't even be mentioned in this movie, as Venom is relocated to a different city taking on villains specific to him. Michelle Williams will apparently be playing Brock's love interest who Ann Weying (Which she confirmed in an interview with Screen Rant) who eventually becomes She-Venom in the comics, but probably won't reach that form in this movie.

This also of course opens the door for Venom's most famous villain Carnage, who is himself a serial killer named Cletus Kasady that bonds with the symbiote. Fans had initially thought Riz Ahmed could be playing this role, but now most fans believe this may be the part Woody Harrelson joined the movie for just a week ago. We now know thanks to the website Atlanta Filming that Ahmed is actually playing Dr. Carlton Drake, who is the leader of the Life Foundation we mentioned earlier. If this is in fact the case, then we can expect to see this as an important behind the scenes role. Fox And Disney Finally Reach A Deal Which Will See The 'X-Men' And 'Fantastic Four' Under Marvel Studios Control

I'm not going to lie, I honestly saw no point in writing an article every single time there was a new rumor or development about this Fox/Disney deal. We all had a pretty good feeling this was going to happen since last week, so I'm not very surprised I'm currently writing this article. Thats right movie fans, for better or worse Disney has made it official that they have acquired several divisions of 20th Century Fox. This includes the likes of Sky TV, Hulu, Fox TV shows, Avatar, Alien, and Planet of the Apes to name a few. But that's not what you all really care about, as the big news is that the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Deadpool are officially owned by Marvel Studios. But what does this mean for all of their current franchises?

The news came early Thursday morning courtesy of the Walt Disney Company's official website, where they listed the details of the deal. Like I stated above, there's probably a little of details in that article that are of little interest to fans, but the acquisition did end up coming out to about $52.4 billion. Not everyone has been so happy about the deal and what this means for the industry, with some worried that Disney is slowly becoming monopolized company and taking away from the diversity in the industry. There's also those comic book fans that are worried about what this could mean for Ryan Reynolds' current iteration of Deadpool, who is far from anything Disney has made before.

It'll take about 18 months for the deal to be finalized, so we can projects such as X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Deadpool 2, and New Mutants all to make their way to theaters as expected. But sequels to all the movies are certainly in question now, as Disney will be looking to reboot all these characters and recast so that they can be including in the MCU, like they did with Spider-Man. There will certainly be casualties to the new deal, including movies based on X-23, Multiple Man (Which would've starred James Franco), and of course Channing Tatum's long in development hell Gambit movie. It seems the decision about what will happened to this already planned Fox slate will land on Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, whose goal is to eventually incorporate all these characters into the MCU. 

The path for Fantastic Four as of right now is probably a lot smoother, already having had failed twice at adapting the characters. Marvel is likely planning a way to bring them into the MCU without giving them a solo movie yet (Considering how poorly the last few were received), so expect an introduction similar to that of Spider-Man in Civil War. Unlike with X-Men having big named and well cast actors such as Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender that will be much harder to recast, Marvel shouldn't have too much trouble casting Reed Richards, Sue and Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm for the MCU. 

McAvoy and Fassbender's version of Professor X and McAvoy have really grown on people in the last couple of years, and have served as worthy successors to Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. But of course the role that will be the biggest to cast, and has already gotten the people over at Disney excited is that of Wolverine. There were some rumors that Jackman could finally fulfill his wish of playing the character alongside The Avengers, but he has since confirmed that the part will be going to someone else. It should only be a matter of time before the rumor mill starts up about who will be taking over the big shoes left by Jackman, but its safe to say Marvel Studios knows what they're doing when you look back at their track record of casting these big name heroes.

Brand New Trailer For Spielberg's 'Ready Player One' Provides Us With More Easter Eggs And Plot Details

So just to get this out of the way before you start reading this article, there's no way in hell I'm going to be able to list every single Easter egg shown in this trailer. I'll leave that to the guys on YouTube who dedicate hours of their day pausing and studying these two minutes of footage. Now what am I going to write about, is just how awesome it is to see Steven Spielberg return to the sci-fi genre. While the director has had a lot of success with recent serious drama such as Bridge of Spies and The Post, we can't forget the ambitious other-worldly films that put him on the map in the first place. The latest trailer for his upcoming film Ready Player One certainly fits the ambitious other worldly criteria, as it gives us a much better idea of what the movie is actually about.

Below is the new full-length trailer for Ready Player One:

Like I stated above, the trailer does in fact give us a lot more about the movie's plot than the original Comic-Con teaser did. We learn more about our main character Wade Watts who is apparently an orphan that uses the OASIS as an escape from his struggling actual life. We also see that although a lot of the movie will show his avatar Parzival as the main character, Wade still has a lot to do in this movie himself. We see him interacting with Olivia Cooke's character Samantha Cook whose avatar Art3mis is also a key character in the game.

We now know what most reader's of the book already knew, and that is that the main objective of the movie is to complete an Easter egg hunt set up by OASIS founder James Halliday. We got footage of the late Halliday played by Spielberg favorite Mark Rylance in the trailer, explaining that whoever wins gets control over the OASIS and his fortune. Ben Mendelsohn's Nolan Sorrento seems to be a corporate type his also has an interest in going after this fortune, and wants to stop Watt's Parzival from winning the game.

As for the references, like I said I'm not exactly the right guy to be picking a part every single thing I saw, but thats not going to stop me from mentioning a few. We see the surprising inclusion of Overwatch character Tracer in the trailer, as well as the return of Parzival's car the DeLoreon from Back to the Future (And even a cue from the film's score at the end of the trailer), and also the Iron Giant makes his return. We get brief glimpses of Chucky, Deathstroke and Harley Quinn, RX-78 Gundam, King Kong, Ryu, Chun-Li, and Deadshot to name a few. The overly CGI world and characters may be of concern to some viewers, but it seems Spielberg is going to provide a good balance of the two in the film.

Unexpected Trailer For The Visually Stunning 'Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse' Featuring Miles Morales Drops

So apparently Sony isn't about that whole posting a mini teaser trailer every day leading up to the actual trailer tactic that Jurassic World implemented, because no one was expecting this. We're a year away from the mysterious animated Spider-Man movie Sony has been working out independent from any of the Marvel Studios projects, but who would've thought we'd be getting footage this early. We learned a few months ago that the project would be focusing on Miles Morales (Played by Shameik Moore) which had been the rumor for quite some time, but we didn't know how the movie would look or what it would be about. Well this trailer certainly answered one of those questions, as the art style in this footage is truly something I personally have never seen on the big screen before.

So the getting the obvious stuff out of the way, going off the end of the trailer and its title, we now know this isn't just a Miles Morales movie. When we first heard he would be the main character, we just assumed it would feature him in his regular comic book origins along with his supporting characters such as his best friend Ganke. But instead, what we see here is an adaption of the Spider-Verse storyline from the comics in which Peter Parker dies and Miles takes up the mantle from him. We see Miles standing by Peter's grave, but then of course we see the two of them talking in the subway station by the end of the trailer.

But probably one of the biggest parts of this now being a Spider-Verse movie is the potential of how many different version of Spider-Man we're gonna see together on screen. At the end of the trailer, Miles hints at this when he asks Peter "How many of us are there?". There are of course many version of the character from different realities including Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Man Noir, and even Spider-Gwen to name a few. While none of these characters are confirmed for the movie yet, this could be a chance for Sony to adapt all these characters to the big screen who other wise wouldn't get the chance. 

Other then the beautiful visual style that looks nothing like the generic animated films Sony has put out in the past, we get some great looks at the character design for the movie. There's a sign with the name Fisk on it, hinting at the Kingpin himself possibly making an appearance. We also see some hints of the films villains, including Miles' nemesis The Prowler, which is his uncle Aaron Davis. If you remember, Davis was actually played by Donald Glover in Spider-Man: Homecoming, where he also hinted at his nephew Miles. While the two movies are unrelated, this probably will be the only way we'll see the character go full blown villain as it isn't likely to happen in the MCU series.

Disney Resumes Talks To Purchase Fox; Could The 'X-Men' and 'Fantastic Four' Join The MCU?

Picture this. Its early 2014, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier has just wowed critics and audiences with how far the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come. Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters and (putting it nicely) a mess Sony slapped together in order to forcefully start their own cinematic universe. Nobody would've thought just three years later, that whole planned Sony universe would be history, and instead the Spider-Man character would be making his appearance in Infinity War. Well if you thought that was hard to believe, imagine the same happening to the current Fox X-Men and Fantastic Four universes. As hard as it might be to wrap your head around the once thought to be impossible scenario, it might just happen.

Just a few weeks ago, word broke that now struggling 20th Century Fox studio was up for sell. As the past has taught us with studios such as LucasFilm and Marvel Studios, Disney is more then keen of the idea of bringing even more properties under their belt. By the time the news broke though, the two studios had apparently stopped talking after not being able to settle on a deal. This made the entire idea of Marvel reacquiring pretty much the only characters who they don't currently own the rights to seem like a dream what-if scenario.

But according to Deadline's latest report, the possibility of seeing Wolverine stand side by side with Spider-Man and Iron Man (That is if one of them doesn't die in Infinity War) is back on the table. The Wallstreet Journal have stated that the only other serious competition Disney has in buying the company is Comcast, but that talks with the latter are starting to hit up. Whoever reaches the deal will be purchasing 20th Century Fox's TV and movie studios and more, which come out to an estimated worth of $48.5 billion. Sony and Verizon were also apparently contenders, but it seems more likely the House of Mouse will be the company willing the churn up that kind of dough. The Murdochs who own the company apparently want to reach a deal by the end of the year, which my accelerate things.

Now that I've gotten all the business and logistics talk out of the way, lets get to the part that us comic book fans really care about, what does this mean for the movies. Well right now several projects are already in the works at Fox including X-Men: Dark Phoenix, New Mutants, and Deadpool 2. All these films don't exactly seem up Disney's alley but will be released by Fox regardless, but this will certainly effect any movie that Fox has planned beyond that. We can assume Disney would want to incorporate these characters into the MCU as soon as they can, and the only way to do that would be by rebooting them like they did with Spider-Man.

While this is all hypothetical right now, its interesting to speculate what would happen to all these properties in the hands of Disney, and whether its actually whats best for these characters. I think we can all agree Fox has already failed with Fantastic Four twice and is all but out of chances and ideas, so those characters would better off at Marvel. But the X-Men films despite their messy timelines have really had some great adaptions and casting choices, especially in the last few years. Rebooting would mean giving all that up, but with our reward being getting to finally see them interact with other Marvel characters (And hopefully in their actual costumes). Deadpool is probably the character most at risk, as those films have been given so much freedom and lack of censorship that I just can't see happening under the watchful eyes of the Disney heads.

As Promised By The Russo Brothers, Marvel Has Officially Released The 'Avengers: Infinity War' Trailer

It felt like this day would never come for Marvel fans, yeah here it is. The officially released trailer for next years Avengers: Infinity War has been released to the public. While we got a low quality leaked version of the trailer shown at Comic-Con earlier this summer, fans have been waiting for a high quality version but had no idea when they'd get to see it. Thankfully the last few days the directors Joe and Anthony Russo began to drop hints that we were going to be seeing the trailer in the coming days, and sure enough it made it debut on Good Morning America. Not only did Marvel go through with their promise, but we also got tons of new footage that wasn't even shown in Comic-Con trailer.

Below is the first official trailer for Avengers: Infinity War:

To say this trailer is every Marvel fans dream would be a massive understatement. Ten years of build-up through solo movies has led to this one huge film, and its safe to say Marvel isn't holding back. We got a lot of great shots that we saw in the trailer now in better quality, including Steve Rogers now bearded and no longer carrying the mantle of Captain America fighting alongside Bucky, Black Widow, Falcon, War Machine, Iron Man in his Hulkbuster armor, and Black Panther in Wakanda. We still have no idea how these character all end up in the same place, but its assumed this will be the first scene in the movie where they all do. There's a significance absence of Thor in this scene, which has already left movie goers concerned about his fate.

In the mean time we see Tony Stark alongside Doctor Strange, Wong, and Bruce Banner (Who is apparently found by Strange and Wong). It appears Tony may be the first to go one on one with Thanos, and judging by the fact he's getting the shit beaten out of him, I'll assume he isn't going to come out on top. Spider-Man also seems to be sharing a similar fate, as we see him basically being crushed by Thanos in his new Iron-Spider suit. Speaking of the suit, we get some great clear shots of it which confirm its the exact same one Tony offered to Peter at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming (Which he clearly has changed his mind about).

We also see Vision with his now romantic interest Scarlet Witch in a human form, which is strange but could have something to do with him losing the mind gem. Thanos is seen crushing him and ripping the gem off his head to add to his gauntlet, which many fans have speculated means Vision might be meeting his end in this movie. Its hard to tell he might actually bite the dust in this movie as we see just about everybody in distress at some point in the trailer. Now surprisingly absent from the trailer were the Guardians of the Galaxy, who only are shown at the very end meeting Thor which is a snippet of the full scene we saw in the Comic-Con version. This could mean the play a small role in the overall movie then we initially thought, but its still hard to tell.

DC And David F. Sandberg Cast Former 'Chuck' Star Zachary Levi As Their Leading Man In 'Shazam!'

Unlike guys like Superman and Batman, DC's own Captain Marvel doesn't really have much of a place in most Justice League line-ups. But that hasn't stopped Warner Bros. from working on his own solo movie, and who could blame them. The idea of a kid who turns into basically his own version of Superman after yelling a single word has box office hit written all over. We've heard for years now about the idea of a Shazam movie, but never really got much movement other the occasional rumors. Now with a director in place the movie has also found its star, and it isn't who would expect. Its none other than Chuck himself; Zachary Levi.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levi beat out several other actors for the role including Zane Holtz, Derek Theler, Billy Magnussen, and Jake McDorman. As I stated above, Levi isn't exactly the first guy that comes to mind when you an Alex Ross version of Shazam. With The Rock rumored to play Black Adam in this universe, some had even thought he might take on a duel role as both characters. Many fans also wanted to see someone who looked like they could go toe to toe with The Rock, with names like John Cena being thrown around. If there's one thing that for sure, Levi's going to have to start hitting the gym before he takes on Black Adam.

What this casting really does show is the version of the character director David F. Sandberg is going for. Levi has proven time and time again to be the likable every man, with a sense of innocence and childlike energy to him. This seems perfect for a role that will literally have him playing a teenager inside the body of a grown superhero. Its a stark departure from actors like Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, who have obviously taken much more serious approaches to their characters. 

Now that Sandberg has his Shazam, the big question is who will play his alter ego the teenage Billy Batson. I wouldn't doubt if Warner Bros. has their eyes on some of the kids from IT and Stranger Things for this role. Recent audition tapes of also suggested the entire Shazam family may make an appearance, so we'll definitely be getting some cast additions in the coming weeks. We also still don't know if The Rock will actually be showing up in the movie as Black Adam, so hopefully we'll get some news on that soon.

Leonardo DiCaprio Reportedly The Favorite To Play The Joker In Upcoming Scorsese Produced Solo Film

The last few weeks have no been so kind on Warner Bros. and the DCEU, with rumors running rampant all over the web. From seeming confirmation that Ben Affleck wasn't going to be Batman in Matt Reeves' upcoming solo movie (Which has since been debunked), to the news that a Joker movie was in the works without Jared Leto, its become hard to track whats real and whats fake. Well it seems the last bit about a Joker movie may actually be true, as the studio seem to already have an actor in mind to take over in the role. None other than Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly the top choice to play the lead in the project, which will be produced by Leo's longtime collaborator Martin Scorcese (The Wolf of Wall Street).

The rumor was reported by The Hollywood Reporter, who claim Warner Bros. are hoping Scorsese will help lower DiCaprio to the project. It sounds like it will be a solo DC based project outside of the expanded universe, amongst many others the studio has in the pipeline. With the DCEU having struggled in the past, this could be a cool way to see a different (And maybe even better) take on certain characters. The movie was thought to be a Joker origin story, but apparently will follow him as a crime boss in Gotham. Its certainly sounds like a film up both Scorsese and DiCaprio's alley, and it will be directed by Hangover director Todd Phillips.

The choice is certainly inspired, as DiCaprio has proven time and time again he is one of the greatest actors of our generation. He has finally earned himself an Oscar, and we've seen the rage and passion he has brought to roles that are required by any actor who plays a role as iconic as The Joker. The only problem comes with Jared Leto, who is portraying the current DCEU version of the character. The actor is reportedly not happy with the idea of DiCaprio simultaneously playing the role, which is very understandable.

While DiCaprio's version will be completely separate from the other DC movies (We won't see him facing Ben Affleck's Batman at any point), it may be a hard idea for audiences to get behind. For one thing, despite how passionate he was of the role, Leto's portrayal of The Joker in Suicide Squad was not well received. The actor had many of his scenes cut, and also had the misfortune of proceeding Heath Ledger's brilliant performance. DiCaprio's Joker could be a match made in heaven, and give us a worthy Clown Prince of Crime up there with Ledger and Jack Nicholson's iconic versions.

Riz Ahmed Joins Tom Hardy In Sony's 'Venom' Movie; Could He Be Playing Carnage?

Ever since the character's less then stellar appearance in Spider-Man 3, Venom hasn't made his way to the big screen since. Well after several years in development hell, Sony finally seems to have gotten their act together on a solo Venom film. Just a few months ago, we learned that acclaimed actor Tom Hardy had been cast in the title role of Eddie Brock. We also found out Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) would be directing the projecting, and it will apparently have an R rating. Despite speculation about whether it will or will not take place in the MCU, we now have gotten our second bit of casting news. 

According to Variety, Riz Ahmed has joined Venom in a key role as a fan favorite Marvel character. While there's many candidates to speculate over, one clear choice is Cletus Kasady aka Carnage. We've already heard for sometime that Carnage would be the villain of the film, and would loosely adapt the famous Carnage vs. Venom comic. Ahmed is not the first person to come to mind when you think of Kasady from the comics, but seeing him face off against Hardy would certainly make for some great performances. 

Although the site suggest Ahmed is already in talks for the mystery role, apparently many other well known actors were up for the part including Matt Smith (Dr. Who), Pedro Pascal (Narcos), and Matthias Schoenaerts (Red Sparrow). All three are very accomplished actors, but really don't provide any clue as to who the character may be. Ahmed probably has the strongest chance considering his recent credit in the big screen Star Wars film Rogue One, as well as his acclaimed work as the lead in HBO's The Night Of. 

While we might not know much about the film right now, the Venom movie is certainly getting some exciting big names on board. Sony is banking of the film to start their own series of Spider-Man spinoffs, including the upcoming female led Silver and Black (Featuring characters Black Cat and Silver Sable). Its still is hard to tell whether Hardy's Venom (And possibly Ahmed's Carnage) will be featured in the MCU, but it would be exciting to see them face off against Tom Holland's Spidey.
