M. Night Shyamalan Announces 'Unbreakable' and 'Split' Sequel Title, Release Date, and Cast

How times have changed. Just  ten years ago, if you would've mentioned the name M. Night Shyamalan around any movie fan, they would've come at you with a splurge of jokes. A whole generation of young movie goers had only one impression of Shyamalan, his horrendous attempt at making a Last Airbender film adaption. But ten years before that, many considered the director to be the second coming of Spielberg himself. Now Shyamalan falls somewhere in the middle, he isn't quite hyped to the level he was when his career first started, but he's certainly resurrected it. And his next film may seal the deal of his redemption.

Earlier this year, Shyamalan's film Split starring James McAvoy as a kidnapper with several split personalities named Kevin, was a huge success both critically and commercially. The director is known for his twists and this film was no different, as the last scene of the movie revealed the entire story took place in the same universe as Shyamalan's Unbreakable. In Unbreakable David Dunn (Bruce Willis) learns he has superpowers and comes at odds with a man obsessed with becoming his nemesis; Elijah aka Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson).
The twist meant a lot to both the overall story of Split, and to fans of a now 17 year old Shyamalan classic. Willis character David Dunn makes an appearance at the end of the movie (With James Newton Howard's theme from Unbreakable playing in the background), which confirmed that Split was actually all a villain origin story, in the same way Unbreakable was a hero's origin.
No one saw this coming considering how overlooked the first film was, but it has developed a cult following and is considered by many to be before its time. Many have been demanding to get a sequel for years, and now they've got not just one, but two. Shyamalan has confirmed via his Twitter that fans will get to see a crossover between the characters from both movies in a sequel titled Glass in January of 2018. Universal released the following details about the film:

"M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s UNBREAKABLE and last year’s SPLIT—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: GLASS. From UNBREAKABLE, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from SPLIT are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast.

Following the conclusion of SPLIT, GLASS finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men."

News about the sequel is very excited, and has many of us curious about what will happen when all these characters collide. While Mr. Glass (Who the movie is named after) was the original nemesis of the first movie, it seems here he'll be pulling the strings while Dunn and Crumb are the two who physically go after each other. The film should be a nice change from the traditional superhero movies we've been getting, and it'll be interesting to see Shyamalan's spin on the shared universe and blockbuster superhero ideas.
